Sabah village shows 1Malaysia spirit during buka puasa function

KIULU (Sabah), July 2, 2015:Villagers in Kampung Malangang here set their different religions aside and showed what 1Malaysia is all about.

Recognising the importance of preserving religious tolerance, the village’s surau commitee invited local leaders of other religious denominations to break the fast together yesterday.

Elders from the Seventh Day Adventist and Roman Catholic Church readily accepted the invitation, describing it as significant to illustrate the high level of religious tolerance among the people here.

“We are humbled by the invitation (from the surau committee) because we recognise the need for us to maintain religious harmony,” said Pastor Erwin Gadaun of the SDA Church.

The surau’s deputy committee chairman, Akim Sipin, said religious and racial tolerance was the key to a progressive society.

“We want to convey the message that we in Sabah are peace-loving people.”

The breaking of fast was also attended by Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Madius Tangau and Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

Tangau and Bangkuai also presented “sejadah” for the surau and foodstuff to the needy.
