Talented Malaysian Artist Uses Shadows to Bring Star Wars Characters to Life

Red Hong Yi is a Sabahan-born artist known for using unconventional mediums like flower petals, coffee beans and tea bags to make works of art out of them.

On the heels of the highly anticipated opening of the latest star wars film, artist red hong yi has finished a series of mind-bending shadow artworks that take cues from the movie’s most legendary characters like darth vader, yoda and chewbacca. each the seven pieces have been created using an eclectic mix of materials from aluminum foil and a cut-up graphics card to colorful feathers and chocolate cookies.



Red Hong Yi is a Malaysian-born artist known for using unconventional mediums like flower petals, coffee beans and tea bags to make works of art out of them.

In her latest art series, she decided to do Star Wars theme in honor of the release of The Force Awakens.


“I’m posting 7 shadow art pieces created by casting one single light source onto objects made of different textures and materials,” Hong wrote on Instagram.

“Star Wars” Logo – Made out of chocolate cookies with rainbow sprinkles


Princess Leia silhouette – made from slices of Red’s own jeans and some flowers glued onto wires


Master Yoda –  made out of leaves and twigs


Chewbacca – made with colorful feathers


Stormtrooper  – made out of white cotton


R2-D2  – made out of computer graphic cards


Darth Vader – made out of aluminium foil
